Doctoral Residency

Interactive Learning, Valuable Networking

Argosy University doctoral residencies offer a valuable opportunity for our online doctoral students to interact with one another, meet faculty members, and acquire advanced skills and knowledge they need to succeed throughout their programs.

All Argosy University doctoral students complete two residency programs. These interactive three-day programs are scheduled over weekends in various locations throughout the year, making the programs as convenient as possible for students who are balancing their doctoral studies with the demands of work and family.

As the second or third course of their programs of study, students complete Advanced Academic Study and Writing (W7000) concurrently with Residency I. Then during the second to last session of their course work, they complete Residency II, which focuses primarily on the dissertation process.

RESIDENCY I

The first residency program is three days in length and must be completed within the first 9 semester credit hours of the doctoral program. Residency I focuses on topics pertinent to beginning doctoral students, including the following:

  • Ensuring success in the online learning environment
  • Emerging opportunities within fields of study
  • Comprehensive examination process and qualifications
  • Dissertation process
  • Research analysis and methodologies
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Writing at the doctoral level
  • Argosy University policies, procedures, and support systems
  • Argosy University library databases and resources

Students will also have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with instructors and participate in a group Q&A session with faculty members.

RESIDENCY II

Also three days in length, the second residency program occurs in the second to last session of course work. This program focuses on the successful completion of comprehensive examinations and the dissertation. Residency II addresses the following topics:

  • Preparing for the comprehensive examination
  • Creating a research plan
  • The Argosy University Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval process
  • The dissertation writing process
  • Preparing for the dissertation defense
  • In-depth research analysis and techniques
  • Tips and best practices for surviving the dissertation process
  • Forming and working with a committee

Students will also have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with instructors and in small groups with faculty members and fellow students to further define the focus of their dissertation research. A closing Q&A session will ensure that all questions have been answered and all topics have been clarified.

In an effort to make the events as accessible as possible, residency programs are offered at various locations around the country throughout the academic year. Upcoming sessions are noted below.
